Meet the Author Series: Gregory Benford
Dr. Gregory Benford is Professor of Physics at UC Irvine and the major writer of "hard" or science-based science fiction in the world today. He is the co-author of the novel Beyond the Fall of Night (1990) with Arthur C. Clarke. He received his Ph.D. from UC San Diego in 1967, and the San Diego campus figures prominently in Timescape, his Nebula-award-winning novel of 1980. Dr. Benford’s novels are noted for their detailed portraits of how science is done in the modern institutional setting and the politics and culture of science. He names among his formative influences William Faulkner and the oral poetry he heard as a boy growing up in Mobile, Alabama. Among his most recent works are Cosm, Eater, the story collection Dark Matter, and the non-fiction book Deep Time.Posted on 5/5/03 by K. FurutaView the Webcast
