What is GIS? "A geographic information system is a set of tools and methods for capturing, managing and analyzing geographically referenced information. A GIS integrates location-based data, such as an address or map coordinate. This integration allows for display, exploration, and analysis of complex relationships. A GIS is comprised of several components: data; equipment, including computers; software; methods; output, including maps, reports, and other visualizations or synthesis; and the people who use it." from Salton Sea Atlas, ESRI Press, 2002 |
GIS Day at UCR is sponsored by GIS@UCR, the UC Riverside Map Collection and UC Riverside Extension.
The Map Collection is located on the Ground Floor of the Science Library at the University of California, Riverside.
