Have you noticed the three panel mural installed in the Science Library? The work, created by Eliseo Art Silva, depicts the heritage of UCR and highlights student activism and advocacy. The mural, a gift from the Associated Students graduating class of 2001, will permanently hang in the Student Commons when the new building is completed.
The mural is titled “College Life and Advocacy.” The entire design of the work is subtly contained within the face of the UCR bear mascot. The mural weaves together images of orange groves so important to the region, landmarks of Riverside and the UCR campus, notable figures who made the world a better place, and a cluster of hands from various ethnicities coming together for peace and social justice.
The mural depicts aspects of college life. Silva uses a trail of shoes from different lands as a metaphor for the various nationalities that passed through campus and made their mark upon the University of California.
Silva, a former Riverside student, now lives in Philadelphia and is nationally known for his works. His most recent mural, a collaborative project painted by local residents, was unveiled in Riverside at the Highway 91 underpass at Pierce Street.
