Dr. Irwin Sherman, The Power of Plagues
Dr. Irwin Sherman, professor emeritus of Zoology at UC Riverside, is the author of more than 150 research publications and five books. He will speak on his latest book The Power of Plagues, in which he examines the interrelationship between plagues and culture, including the effects of plagues on Western civilization. Written in a lively and entertaining style (that even the most science-phobic reader can enjoy), Sherman describes famous plagues in history, as well as current epidemics such as AIDS, mad cow, West Nile and Ebola virus. Sherman also analyzes the public curiosity and fear that accompany every outbreak, and the challenges of forecasting and preventing emerging plagues.
