Susan Straight, Professor of Creative Writing at UCR and the author of several acclaimed novels, essays, and articles, will read from her latest work, A Million Nightingales. The meticulously-researched book tells the story of 14-year old Moinette, born to a slave girl raped by a white man. A beautiful and intelligent young woman, Moinette must make her way in the brutal world of antebellum slavery. In The New York Times Book Review Straight’s novel was praised as "a powerful and moving story, written in language so beautiful that you can almost believe the words themselves are capable of salving history’s wounds."
