The UCR Libraries' Author Series presentations will be held at 3:15-4:30 p.m. in the Tomás Rivera Library, Special Collections and are free and open to the public.

Dr. Irwin Sherman
October 18, 2006 - Dr. Irwin Sherman, professor emeritus of Zoology at UCR
Dr. Sherman will speak on his latest book The Power of Plagues in which he examines the interrelationship between society and plagues, both historic and current.

Dr. Clare Spark
November 15, 2006 - Dr. Clare Spark, independent scholar and past program director of Pacifica Radio, Los Angeles
In Hunting Captain Ahab: Psychological Warfare and the Melville Revival, Dr. Spark examines Melville scholarship and its enmeshment in political and institutional agenda.

January 17, 2007 - Margaret Nash, professor in the Graduate School of Education at UCR
Professor Nash's groundbreaking book Women's Education in the United States, 1780-1840 (2005 winner of the American Educational Studies Association Critics Choice Book Award) examines societal forces that led to the admission of women to universities - a privilege taken for granted by most young women today.

Roger L. Ransom
April 19, 2007 - Roger L. Ransom, professor in the History Department at UCR
Professor Ransom will speak on his most recent book, The Confederate States of America: What Might Have Been, a work of "counterfactual" history, in which he examines what the United States would be like today if the South had won the Civil War.

Susan Straight will read from her latest work, A Million Nightingales. In The New York Times Book Review Straight's novel was praised as "a powerful and moving story, written in language so beautiful that you can almost believe the words themselves are capable of salving history's wounds.
