Protests in Iran: Dissidents’ Use of New Information Technologies

The Librarians Association of the University of California-Riverside Program Committee invites the UCR Community to an upcoming public program on current events in Iran, entitled:  "Protests in Iran:  Dissidents’ Use of New Information Technologies.

The program will feature internationally-acclaimed author and UCR Associate Professor of Creative Writing, Dr. Reza Aslan, who will look at the use of new technologies and social networking platforms and their use in organizing protests against the recent presidential election results in Iran.  The program will be held on Tues. April 20, 11:00 am-12:00 noon in Room 240 of the Orbach Science Library.  It is open to the university community and anyone may attend.

Aslan's first book, No god but God: the Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam, was an international bestseller, was translated into thirteen languages, and named one of the 100 most important books of the last decade.  He is also author of How to Win a Cosmic War (published in paperback as Beyond Fundamentalism: Confronting Religious Extremism in a Globalized Age), and editor of an upcoming anthology from Norton titled Tablet & Pen: Literary Landscapes from the Modern Middle East.  

Aslan is President and CEO of Aslan Media Inc, whose holdings include BoomGen Studios, a mini-motion picture and media company focused entirely on entertainment about the Greater Middle East and its Diaspora communities.

Professor Reza is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the Board of Directors of the Ploughshares Fund, Abraham’s Vision, and PEN USA. He founded BOOMGEN Studios, the first-ever motion picture company to focus on entertainment about the Greater Middle East and its diaspora communities. Born in Iran, he currently resides in Southern California.
