Read a message from the University Librarian regarding the change in library hours

Dear Faculty, Graduate Students, Undergraduate Students, and the University Community,

This is to alert the University community that there will be a change in Library hours for the 2012 fiscal year.  As you are aware, UCR, and the UC system at large, have faced significant budget challenges for the past two fiscal years, with UCR having to absorb $37.8 million or more in budget reductions annually.  The Libraries’ component of the reduction FY2012 has been established at 8.36 percent or $904,814 plus several unfunded mandates passed on to each campus by the Office of the President, all of which must be drawn from Library operations and personnel salary dollars in order to protect the collections budget as a top University priority.  In response to these circumstances, UCR Libraries has had to make the very difficult decision to reduce hours for the 2011-2012 academic year.

We have consulted closely with Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, Dallas Rabenstein, in making this decision.  The reduction in hours will be 7 fewer hours per week for the Rivera Library, and 7 fewer hours per week for the Orbach Science library, both to be implemented during the evenings and on weekends.  We believe this approach will be the least painful to students and faculty as we work to reduce the impact of the budget reduction.

The choice of weekend and evening hours for the reduction has been based on an analysis of library usage patterns which tend to be very low on the weekends and late evenings.   The new schedule will support the most efficient utilization of library personnel to maintain key public access services and resources in light of reduced staffing levels that will result from the budget reduction during hours the Libraries are most heavily used:  Monday-Friday; when more than 4,000 students use library facilities and services on a daily basis. In addition, energy savings may accrue to the University at large with an hours reduction. Digital access to library resources and digital reference services will continue to be available 24/7 regardless of budget reductions.  We plan to continue extended library hours during all final exam periods, regardless of the budget reduction, for the benefit of students.

Hours for the Music and Multimedia libraries will remain the same in that their hours were reduced during the past fiscal year in response to budget reductions.  We welcome you back after what we hope was a restful and productive summer!

See the new schedule for library hours above.  For the complete schedule see http://library.ucr.edu/hours   Your questions and comments are most welcome.

Sincerely,

Ruth M. Jackson
