Our Gestetner keeps on turning--underground printing in communist Poland, 1976–1989
During the two final decades of communism in Eastern Europe, publishing underground reached a monumental scale. In Poland, thousands of books and journals were printed and distributed outside of state censorship. This social phenomenon was one of the major factors contributing to the collapse of communism first in Poland, and eventually in the whole Soviet bloc. Gwido Zlatkes, an active participant in those events, and now a librarian in Special Collections & Archives, will give a picture of the Polish underground publishing industry.
WHEN: Tuesday, December 13, 2011, 3:30-4:15 PM
WHERE: Room 403, Rivera Library, 4th floor.
Tea reception to follow.
Sponsored by the Librarians’ Association of the University of California-Riverside.
