The Merck Index is an encyclopedia of chemicals, drugs, and biologicals that contains more than 10,000 monographs. The entries cover a wide range of compounds that have been selected by the editors on the basis of present or historic importance and interest. The information provided on each substance includes chemical, common and generic names, trademarks and their associated companies, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Numbers, molecular formulas and weights, physical and toxicity data, therapeutic and commercial uses, citations to the chemical, biomedical and patent literature, and chemical structures. |
The Electronic version of the Merck Index is split up into the following three sections: Compound Search for locating compounds by physical properties, compound attributes, and structure; Organic Name Reactions; and, Additional Tables which include amino acids abbreviations and pKa, common heterocyclic ring systems, and universal conversion factors.
