North American Women's Drama

Helen Krich Chinoy and Linda Walsh Jenkins posed in the preface of their book, Women in American Theatre, "where do women fit it?" North American Women's Drama aims to address this issue by publishing the full text of plays by more than 300 women from North America. This resource will bring together more than 1,500 plays when complete, together with detailed information on biographical, production, and theatrical information. Approximately 20% of the plays have never been published before. |
Beginning with writers Charlotte Ramsay Lennox and Susanna Haswell Rowson in colonial times, and spanning to present with contemporary playwrights such as Beth Henley, Jeannie Barroga, and Caridad Svich, this collection will be of particular interest to students/researchers of women’s studies, theater, and literature. The indexing makes it possible to find and analyze particular dialogue, characters and events. Subject searching, for instance, on "Japanese American Internment" yields 19 scenes, many from an unpublished play entitled The Only Hope by Haruko Nakata Akamatsu. Searching under "Character" and limiting to occupation of librarian retrieved several characters, including "Addie" from Happy Birthday by Anita Loos and "Annie Nesbitt" in Laura Annawyn Shamas' Telling Time.
