Finding Articles

Articles are found in Article Databases.  Unfortunately, there is not one single database that contains all articles, so the first step to finding articles, is picking a database. We have a large collection of journal-article indexes/databases in differerent subject areas that allow you to locate articles by subject, author, title and more.

Choosing article databases

You are always welcome to ask a reference librarian for assistance.

tip

Don't try to use the Library Catalog to find articles. Scotty and Melvyl don't have any idea what is inside thejournals we own.

How do I search a database?

Each of the several hundred databases the Library subscribes to varies somewhat in how they look or are searched. When searching an unfamiliar database:

Is my article full-text online?

Once you have found an article in a database that is interesting to you, use UC-eLINKS to find the out where is it. If the article is available online, UC-eLinks will either connect directly to it or provide a link that says "find it online..." If the article is available in print in the library, you will likely see a call number. If UCR does not have the article, you can click on"Request from another library".

Where does the Library keep its print journals?

Recent journals are in the Current Periodicals section of each library. Older volumes of journals are bound and shelved in the stacks of each library by call number. Current periodicals are on the second (main) floor of the Orbach Science Library. Current periodicals are on the first floor in Rivera. The call numbers for all journals can be found in Scotty.

tip
Sometimes the best way to find journal articles is in the Reference list of articles you have already found.
