How do I find primary sources in SCOTTY?

 Enter keywords that describe your topic and "primary source keywords" in the advanced search in SCOTTY (http://scotty.ucr.edu).

So for our earlier topic, you might search for diaries or letters written by people who lived in the South during that time period.  The search might look like this:

Connect synonyms or similar concepts with OR to get more results

To retrieve variations of a word, use an asterisk (*) at the end of the root word.  For example south* will retrieve items that have south, southern, southerner, southerners, southeast, etc. in it
