This unsettling Michael Mathias Prechtl poster was issued by Traven's German publisher, Büchergilde Gutenberg, to honor the author in 1990. Showing Traven in the guise of Ret Marut, German revolutionary; Traven Torsvan, explorer; and B. Traven the writer, it gives apt expression to the enigmatic nature of the man who wanted to be known only for his writing. He is joined by some of the Mexican characters from his novels. The three signatures are exact reproductions of those found on rare signed letters from the author.

M. M. Prechtl was a frequent illustrator of Büchergilde Gutenberg books and advertising materials.
