Johannes Commelin: The Belgick, or Netherlandish Hesperides, 1683
Commelin's Hesperides was originally published in Amsterdam in 1676. Although oranges were said to have reached Europe as early as the thirteenth century, it wasn't until the last quarter of the seventeenth century that the Dutch enthusiasm for citrus had spread throughout Europe. This English translation followed relatively quickly, perhaps attesting to the need for citrus growing information in the British Isles.
