The well-known landmark building that served as the foundation of the new UC Riverside campus in 1954 was not built until 1918. This display pays homage to the earlier days leading up to the proud moment of the inauguration of that new facility. The original 1907 location of the Riverside Citrus Experiment Station was “one mile west of the city, at the east base of Rubidoux Mountain.” It was, according to the 1905 law enacted by the California Legislature, “to provide … adequate facilities for the investigation of all subjects having important bearing on citrus production.” This photo, showing the building with its north wing, was taken in the 1930s.
