At this 1907 Riverside gathering, leaders in the citrus industry exchanged ideas
“as to the purposes and objects and the best method of procedure in starting [the Citrus Experiment Station].”
John Henry Reed welcomed them. Prof. Ralph B. Smith of the University of California laid out the plans for research into
“irrigation, fertilization, introduction of new varieties, best methods for handling fruits for the market,” etc.
