Using Our Collections

SC&UA Materials will not be paged and reproductions will not be made after 4:45 p.m.


Using Materials
  • Pens are not permitted. Only the use of a pencil is permitted for note taking while using materials.

  • Colored paper for note taking will be provided if researcher wishes to take notes.

  • Use of cataloged materials is limited to two items at a time.

  • Use of archival materials is limited to one box at a time.

  • Use extreme care when handling materials.

  • Keep folders and pages within folders in the order in which they were issued. If items appear to be missing or out of order, please do not rearrange; please notify departmental staff instead.

  • Never add or erase marks in any materials.

  • Use bound volumes in book cradles located on Reading Room tables. Use book weights to hold pages open.

  • Nothing should be placed directly on top of materials or folders containing materials, such as elbows, laptops, pencils, magnifying equipment, etc.

  • Note taking on top of materials or folders containing materials is prohibited.

  • Gloves will be provided for handling photographs or negatives.


Reading Room Guidelines
  • Materials do not circulate and must be used in the Reading Room.

  • Food and drink are not allowed.A valid photo identification card is required to use materials and will be kept at the reference desk while materials are in use.

  • All personal items including books, notebooks, backpacks, purses, briefcases, large outdoor jackets, and laptop bags must be stored in one of the lockers provided in the Reading Room.

  • Use of laptops and electronic tablets is allowed.

  • Reproductions of materials can be provided by departmental staff.

  • Use of digital cameras is allowed. A Camera Usage Form must be filled out and returned to the desk before photographing.

  • Use of personal scanners is not allowed.

  • Use of tables and computers are for Reading Room researchers only.

  • Materials are only to be used on designated tables in the Reading Room and are not to be used at the computer tables.

  • Laptops and other items should not obstruct the view of materials from the information desk staff.

  • Use of cell phones is not allowed in the Reading Room.
Finding Materials
  • All of our books and select archival collections are available in, SCOTTY, the UCR Libraries' online public access catalog (searches can be limited to either the Eaton Science Fiction Collection or Special Collections & Archives).

  • Additional information regarding our archival holdings can be found by accessing the Manuscript Collections and University Archives web pages.

  • Finding aids for select collections can be accessed via the Online Archive of California.

  • If you would like to work extensively with one of our unique archival collections please contact us in advance so that the requested materials are ready upon your arrival.
