For questions about this policy, please contact Manuel Urrizola.
The UCR policy is to use tag "050-blank-4" for original cataloging that requires a new record in OCLC.
The "050-blank-4" policy also applies to bibliographic records with copy that lack a call number: add an LC-type call number to record, using tag "050-blank-4."
For call numbers in bibliographic records with copy:
1) If the record has tag 050 or 090 and the entire call number will be accepted "as is," do not edit the tag. Accept the tag, indicators, and call number without any change.
2) If the record has tag 050 but a change must be made to the call number:
a. Ignore the first indicator
b. Change the second indicator to "4"
c. Make the change to the call number
d. If the 050 already has a second indicator of "4," then make no further changes to the tag or indicators.
3) If the record has tag 090 but a change must be made to the call number:
a. Do not change the tag and any indicators
b. Make the change to the call number
Do not check the Library of Congress catalog to see if LC owns the item (first indicator "0") or does not own the item (first indicator 1) or to indicate that LC assigned the call number (second indicator of "0") on their own record.
