Four Ways to Store Records into EndNote Library

There are four different ways to store records into EndNote

  1. Entering Information Manually
  2. Direct Search (using connection file)
  3. Direct Export
  4. Import->Export (two-steps process using filter)

1. Entering Information Manually

Not all databases are compatible with EndNote program. For some sources, entering information manually is the only way to add citations into EndNote. For example: personal interviews, archival materials.

  • Open an EndNote library, under Reference menu select New Reference
  • Select an appropriate reference type (journal article, book etc.) from the dropdown box
  • Click on each field to add information
  • After entering desired information, close the record by clicking on  in the upper right corner.

2. Direct Search Using Connection File

Direct Search allows you to access, search, and import references from a remote database via a built in feature in EndNote program. It is convenient for simple author/title searches. However, it does not allow for more complex searches such as using discriptors, limiting search to scholarly journal etc.. To perform direct search from off campus you would also need to download a campus VPN (Virtual Private Network) Service

Steps:

  • Open an Endnote library, under Tool menu, select the Connect submenu, and select Connect

  • Select a database with appropriate information provider, and click on Connect
  • Begin to perform search in the new search window

  • In retrieved references window, highlight desired records and click on  to copy them into EndNote library

3. Direct Export

Some information providers offer a direct export feature which automatically transfer saved records into EndNote. The exact steps on executing direct export vary from database to database.  But the basic principle is to perform search, mark/add desired recordsl, and during email/print phase of the search check if EndNote export is an option.
