Mobile Library Services: QR Codes, SMS, and Email Notifications

We are happy to announce three additional mobile Library services now available to you, including QR Codes, SMS Features, and Email Notifications.

1) QR Codes

Think of QR codes as square barcodes that hold various information within them. Instead of bars, they consist of pixels arranged in a square pattern. The data encoded can be text, a URL, or other data.

QR Codes will work on smartphones with the help of any type of QR scanner app. Download the appropriate app for your phone before proceeding. (Links listed on the right).

QR Codes can be found in two places on our website.
  1. In our catalog, you will get the book's information (Title, Call Number, Location, and Status) right on your phone.
    1. Go to our Library Catalog: scotty.ucr.edu
    2. Enter your search terms.
    3. Select an item from the results.
    4. On your phone, turn on the QR Code scanner app.
    5. Point your phone at the QR code on the lower right corner. Once you scan it, the book's information will be displayed on your phone. (Sample code at the bottom right of this page.)
  2. The QR code on the top right of this page takes you to our mobile Library website.

2) SMS/Texting & Email Notifications

If you do not have QR code capabilities on your phone, you also have the option of sending SMS or email notifications instead. SMS notifications will work on any mobile phone that accepts text messages. NOTE: Carrier charges may apply.

  1. Go to our Library Catalog: scotty.ucr.edu
  2. Enter your search terms.
  3. Click on the button on the page.
  4. From the drop down menu, select your phone carrier OR email.
  5. Enter in your phone number (no spaces, and include area code) OR your Email address.
  6. Then hit Send.
  7. Once you hit send, you will get an SMS notification on your phone OR email.

Enjoy!

Enjoy these new mobile-friendly and convenient features in our Library catalog. Don't forget to let us know what you think! Your comments are valuable to us.
