UCR CITRUS HISTORY
Campus ¤ Culture ¤ Community

The Citrus Experiment Station, founded in 1907, became a world center for research in citrus and subtropical horticulture.  From these roots the University of California Riverside evolved as an institution, continuing a tradition of excellence in science.  This exhibit commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the Citrus Experiment Station and celebrates citrus history on campus and in our community.

In 1873, two small navel oranges were sent to Eliza Tibbets in Riverside.  From these trees an agricultural industry was born that shaped “The Golden State.”  Today, the UCR Citrus Variety Collection maintains citrus stock as a genetic resource for research.  The California Citrus State Historical Park in Riverside preserves groves to tell the story of the industry's role in history.

Citrus has influenced our local culture.  It is a theme depicted in art, literature, and in community events.  In 2005, the campus premiered the play Orange Grove written by Kate Anger in the UCR Theater Department.  The city of Riverside celebrates its heritage at the annual Orange Blossom Festival.  In 2006 and 2007 many special events on campus will mark the 100th Anniversary of the Citrus Experiment Station.
