Lending Regulations for UCR Undergraduates, UCR Extension Students, and Other UC Campus Students

at the Science Library

The Science Library houses the majority of collections supporting the College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences and the Collegeof Engineering at UCR. Your UCR Library card entitles you to borrow materials from the Science Library as well as the Tomas Rivera Library andthe Music Library. These libraries, together with the resources provided at the Media Library, make up a large and varied collection of almost two million volumes. Library hours, departments, and services are listed onthe internet at: http://library.ucr.edu or on flyers and brochures available in the Libraries.

Library Cards

The UCR Card,  obtained from the UCR Carding Office, serves as the library card for UCR undergraduates. All others must obtain their cards at the Circulation/Reserve Desk where it will be necessary to show ID from the school you attend with current enrollment information and one other form of ID such as a California Driver's License. The Library issues cards until 15 minutes before the Circulation/ReserveDesk closes.

Please be sure to have your UCR library I.D. card with  you, as Library staff are unable to perform library transactions without it. Please notify the Library immediately of any lost or stolen cards. You will be held responsible for any material checked out with the card before its loss is reported. UCR library cards are not transferable.

Checking Out Material

Library materials may be checked out at the Circulation/Reserve Desk. The material in the Map Collection that circulates is checked out from that service desk. Every borrower must present a valid UCR library card in order to check out library material. You are responsible for all material checked out on your card. Unless designated "Library Use Only," all materials circulate to UCR students. The loan period for monographic material (normal books)  is four weeks. Other materials, such as bound and unbound periodicals, reserve material, maps, and government publications, have varied loan periods.  Periodicals and Reserve material do not circulate to non-UCR patrons.

Return your material to the Library from which the material was borrowed. If returned to another UCR Library, the material is not consideredreturned until it reaches its correct destination and may result in finesand replacement bills.

Holds & Recalls

UCR students have the privilege of recalling materials that another patron has checked out. A recall shortens the original borrowing period, making it due before the date stamped onthe date due slip. Recalled materials should be available in approximately 7 days.

You will receive a recall notice from the Library when someone requests material you have checked out. The book will then be due within 7 days of the date printed on the recall notice. Return the book promptly to avoid being fined. If you still need the material, you may place a hold on the item when you return it.

The minimum recall fine is $11.00 for the first day it is late, and $1.00 for each day thereafter, up to a maximum of $30.00.

Renewals

SCOTTY, the UCR online Library Catalog, allows you to renew your materials up to two times.

On or before the due date, log into the UCR Library's web site at: http://library.ucr.edu/view/scotty/myaccount.html or  telnet://scotty.ucr.edu (Telnet).  Scotty will inform you if there is a recall or if material cannot be renewed.  After the material has been renewed two times, it will have to be renewed at the Circulation/Reserve Desk.

Reserve materials may not be renewed online and must be renewed at the Circulation/Reserve Desk.

Only unbound journals and uncataloged government documents may be renewed by telephone.

Overdues and Billing

Library material is considered overdue if it is not returned by the due date stamped on a date due slip, by the due date indicated on a recall notice, by the due date and time written on the date due slip of reserve material, or by the due date written on special loans.

An overdue notice will be emailed or printed when books or journals are three days overdue. The Library will send the notice to you as a courtesy reminder to return or renew your materials. Failure to receive an overdue or recall notice will not prevent your being billed.  Bills include the replacement cost of the book and a processing fee of $10.00 per item.

Processing fees and daily fines are non-refundable.The UCR Business Services Office may add additional late charges. Borrowers will be billed for the replacement cost of unreturned, damaged, or lost items. Replacement costs may be refunded in some circumstances.

Overdue Reserve Material

An item becomes overdue if it is returned past the dateand time it is due. Each overdue item is assessed a $10.00 processing fee plus $4.00 for the first hour or portion of an hour and $1.00 per hour or portion of an hour thereafter. There is no grace period. Your name may be submitted to the respective professor or the Student Conduct Coordinator for critically needed materials checked out and not returned on time.

Change of Address

The Library prefers an email address. Please fill outa change of address form at the Library whenever you move, take a leave of absence, or change internet providers. Changing your address with another campus agency does not change your address with the Library.

Security

Library collections are protected by an electronic security system. Attempted theft will be prosecuted. Please be certain that all library materials have been properly checked out before exiting.

Borrowing Privileges at Other Libraries

You may also obtain borrowing privileges at other UC libraries and selected colleges and statewide, subject to the rules and regulations of each library.
