Science Library Interlibrary Services
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
Currently enrolled UCR students, faculty and staff may borrow materials which UCR does not own from another library through ILL. Fee card holders, students of other academic institutions, UC Alumni, Extension Students, ESL Students and Friends of the Library are not eligible for Interlibrary Loan.
WHAT IS AVAILABLE THROUGH INTERLIBRARY LOAN?
Materials available through Interlibrary Loan include books, periodical articles, newspapers, and some microforms. Periodical articles requested are usually supplied in photocopy format. It is not usually possible to borrow entire issues or volumes of periodicals. There is usually no charge to you for materials obtained through Interlibrary Loan; the library subsidy normally covers these charges.
HOW TO REQUEST AN INTERLIBRARY LOAN
UC faculty, students and staff may request items by:
- Using the REQUEST service from the MELVYL Catalog, many UCR & UC-licensed databases, and the UC-eLinks Citation Linker to place requests for materials from other UC Libraries automatically
- Article Request [show me how]
- Journal, Magazine or Newspaper Request [whole volume(s) and issue(s)]
- Book Request [show me how]
- Book chapter Request
- Dissertation Request
- Government Document Request
- Video Request
- Sending email requests to illsci@ucr.edu
- Printed request forms are still available at the Reference Desk
If you're having trouble with any of the above forms, click here.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
We act on your request immediately. The time it takes to send the requests and receive the material varies, depending upon the availability and type of material requested. Some material is rapidly available from other campuses of the University and state colleges, while other publications have to be requested out-of-state or from private institutions. It is wise to allow a minimum of 4-5 working days, and longer for esoteric or high-use materials.
WHERE TO PICK UP ILL MATERIALS
Loan materials ordered through the Science ILL Unit may be picked up at the Circulation Desk in the Science Library. Photocopies are mailed to the patron via campus or U.S. mail.
PATRON RESPONSIBILITIES
- Return ILL materials promptly.
Request renewals before the due date. Respond immediately to overdue and recall notices. Materials on loan from another library are always subject to recall by the owning library for one of their patrons. After the second overdue notice library privileges are suspended until materials are returned. Patrons are billed for lost materials. Failure to return books jeopardizes UCR's ability to obtain materials for all its patrons.
