Reserve Services: Reserve Information

Reserve Services: Reserve Information

Reserve Services houses materials selected by faculty members as required readings for their courses.  Access is restricted to UCR faculty, staff, and students.

Reserve materials include books, scores and multimedia from the libraries' collection, in addition to professor's personal material. Reserve call numbers may be found searching SCOTTY.

E-Reserves provides online access to selected documents on Reserve for specific UCR courses. These documents are passworded (provided by professor) and available to UCR students enrolled in the course for viewing and printing 24 hours a day. Materials posted may include class notes, past exams, homework solutions, journal articles, and limited book chapters.

Since reserve materials are in high demand, they are checked out for short periods of time: rounded to the nearest two, three, or four hours, one day, three days, or seven days.  All reserve material must be checked out at the Circulation/Reserve Desk using a valid UCR/Library card. Return material directly to the reserve bookdrop or service desk of the library from which the item was checked out.  For the Rivera and Orbach Science Libraries, items may be returned to the outside bookdrop of the library from which it was checked out during the hours it is closed.  You are responsible for all materials checked out on your card.

Hourly material due at or after closing becomes due one hour after the Library reopens the next business day.  When the library is closing at 11pm, 2 hour materials that are checked out after 9pm may be kept overnight.  When the library is closing at 10pm, 2 hour materials that are checked out after 8pm may be kept overnight.  When the library is closing at 5pm (Friday and Saturday), 2 hour materials that are checked out after 3pm may be kept overnight. Please see the Libraries' Overnight Reserve Checkout Schedule for more information.

Holds may be placed on checked out material for the next available time period.  Holds must be picked up within 15 minutes of the reservation time or the material will be released to other users.
Same-day overnight holds may be placed on Orbach Science or Rivera Library Reserve material at the Circulation/Reserves Desk throughout the day.  Patrons with overnight holds may not check out the held material within 2 hrs. of the overnight checkout time.  All holds must be placed in person with a valid UCR/Library Card at the Circulation/Reserve Desk of the library in which it is on Reserve.

Materials must be brought back to the Circulation/Reserve Desk to be renewed. Renewals cannot be taken over the phone. Materials with holds may not be renewed.

All reserve materials are due on the hour.  An item becomes overdue if it is returned past the date and time it is due.  There is no grace period.  Overdue charges will continue to accrue until the item is returned or charged for replacement.  Claim of failure to be notified about an overdue item will not exempt you from being billed.  Borrowers will be billed for the cost of unreturned or lost books.  Billing information may be found on the Libraries' Fines and Fees page.  An
online billing appeal may be submitted after the library has assessed a bill for overdue charges for items checked out to you. The appeal will only be accepted within 60 calendar days of the date the bill is issued.

Providing effective Reserve service is a way for the library to work in partnership with faculty to further the education of UCR students.
