Library Assistant III (Assistant Night Supervisor, Orbach Science Library)

Essential Functions: The incumbent in this position serves as the Orbach Science Library Assistant Night Supervisor and is responsible for providing assistance and administering public service functions and transactions to patrons at the Circulation/Reserves Desk primarily in the evening hours; maintains the library’s patron database, processing various file loads and reviewing patron records for accuracy; coordinates and compiles departmental statistics; responsible for opening the Library Facility on Sundays, but may occasionally be asked to shift schedule to close Sundays in the absence of the Billing/Night Supervisor; assumes responsibility for the functional operation of the Circulation/Reserves Services Unit and the Orbach Science Library during breaks or other absences of the Billing/Night Supervisor; coordinates emergency situations and assists staff in other units in solving patron difficulties in the absence of the Billing/Night Supervisor; may be used as backup in emergency situations in Circulation/Reserve Services. Must be able to work Sunday 12:45-9:45 P.M., Monday-Thursday 2:15 P.M.-11:15 P.M. during the academic year. Must be able to work daytime shifts during summer and intersession periods. Must be able to work flexible hours for staffing in backup situations - days, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Hours may vary from quarter to quarter. There are two open positions: 1 Assistant Night Supervisor in the Orbach Science Library (as posted) and 1 Assistant Night Supervisor in the Rivera Library (with similar duties).

Minimum Skills: Strong customer service skills in a related environment. Demonstrates strict attention to detail while performing data entry, proofreading, and compiling data. Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and a professional, helpful attitude in working and communicating effectively in an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Interpersonal communication skills to communicate effectively with a wide variety of people and to arbitrate conflicts involving policies and procedures to a mutually satisfactory conclusion. Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing with supervisors, and co-workers in a positive and constructive manner. Reasoning skills, creativity in problem solving, ability to apply sound, independent logic and judgment, and to extrapolate from one situation to another to resolve problems and to make appropriate decisions. Ability to perceive, understand and implement goals, policies and procedures of the department and to work collaboratively with others to meet them. Writing skills sufficient to prepare correspondence, reports, meeting minutes, manuals and other communications in a clear and concise manner. Ability to interpret, explain and apply complex policies and procedures accurately and consistently. Ability to work with constant interruptions and handle a variety of responsibilities simultaneously. Ability to remain calm under pressure; Flexibility to adjust to rapidly fluctuating priorities and to adjust own workflow to assist in a back-up capacity during staffing shortages and periods of heavy workload. Ability to understand, follow and execute detailed instructions. Demonstrates versatility in accommodating a variety of schedules. Knowledge of general library terminology. Ability to file accurately by Library of Congress call number system and alphabetically. Ability to perform cash register transactions accurately and consistently. Experience using an Integrated Library System, such as Millennium. Ability to work with microcomputers and software such as MS Office and email programs. Math skills sufficient to accurately gather, compare, and compile information. Ability to work collaboratively with others in a team environment. Experience handling safety and emergency situations.

Preferred Skills: Experience working in a Circulation/Reserve Services Unit in an academic library. Demonstrated ability to train, motivate, and direct the work of others. Experience using an Accounts Receivable System, such as SIS+. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
