April is National Poetry Month!

April is National Poetry Month! This celebration of poetry was established in 1996 by The Academy of American Poets to honor the extraordinary legacy and ongoing achievement of American poets, and to introduce more Americans to the pleasures of reading poetry.

Special Collections & Archives will be observing National Poetry Month with a special exhibition of poetry through the ages. On display will be a selection of several beautiful printed volumes of poetry, broadsides signed by some of the leading poets of the 20th century, and a sampling of works produced by the students in the "Introduction to the History of Book" (CRWT 186A). In this class, students are taught to set type and print broadsides and chapbooks of their own work. Working with the antique printing presses and the large collection of type fonts, students learn to appreciate more completely the art of the book. In an age of quick and easy computer processing, the experience of meticulously setting type and hand printing creates a bond between the creator and the created, and helps students to appreciate more deeply fine printing. Come to Special Collections & Archives to enjoy this exhibition and to see the beautiful, fully-functioning antique printing presses on the 4th floor Rivera Library.
