John Henry Reed lobbies for bringing a Citrus Experiment Station to Riverside, 1900

J.H Reed Speech 1900

As early as 1900, John Henry Reed was advocating bringing a citrus experiment station to Riverside. His aim was to gather researchers and funding to work on solutions to the numerous diseases and pests threatening the booming citrus industry of Southern California. He pressed the issue tirelessly up and down the state for the next five years until the California Legislature passed the 1905 act authorizing the University of California to establish the Citrus Experiment Station in Riverside.
