The Muses of Tragic: Societal Oppressions

According to the judges, Ms. Shah’s entry is a very well-focused collection which demonstrates the different forms of oppression endured and conquered by various fictional heroes. In her statement, Ms. Shah eloquently described how she identified her own challenges in life through the stories in her collection, and how the stories helped shape her passion for literature. The judges were also impressed by her detailed annotations that included elaborate analysis of the characteristics of oppression exemplified in the books as well as her personal attachment to the physical features of her copies. Her collection gives evidence of her knowledge of the subject and shows great potential for growth.

Peanuts: A Collection of Charles Schulz's Timeless Comic

Consisting primarily of the book collection passed down from her parents, Ms. Howerton’s entry is an extensive collection that covered Charles Shultz’s Peanuts in a variety of formats and styles. Ms. Howerton’s thoughtfully written statement and careful addition of new items effectively convey the importance of this legacy collection to her and her family. The judges found her annotations very informative, and were especially impressed by her knowledge of the publishers and publication history of Peanuts. Her entry gave the judges a new recognition and appreciation for the influence that this popular comic strip has had on American culture.
