What is data?

Data is the information gathered in research. This can be information about archaeological artifacts, information about weather or star locations, medical research results, psychological study outcomes, or any other information gathered that may or may not be published in a final research report. Data can be in the format of Excel Spreadsheets, SPSS files, SQL Share, CAD files, and many other formats.

Data and The Libraries

Data is part of the research process and the libraries work with data in several ways;

  • We identify and provide access to major data sets.
  • We make available instructional materials on working with data
  • We can help you figure out what to do with your data when you finish your research project (or even before).
  • We are working nationally on projects to link research data in order to reveal patterns and make data more accessible.

Working with Data

Got data?

NSF and other grant agencies now require that data gathered with grant agency funding be archived in a secure environment. Even if it isn't required, there are excellent reasons to deposit data.

Cool Data Projects

  • OpenContext (currently mostly Archaeological and Medical, GPS linked)
