To find out if UCR owns a specific journal:

  1. Start at the library's homepage at
  2. On the left side of the page, click on Scotty Catalog
  3. When you see the yellow box, look to the right and click on Periodicals
  4. Now that the box is pink, click on Periodical Title
  5. Type in the name of the journal

Scotty will tell you if the library has electronic access to the journal and/or if the library owns it in print. For further information on finding the journal click here.

Relevant databases to use when looking for articles:

  1. Start at the library's homepage at
  2. On the left, click on Databases by Subject
  3. Click on Psychology & Social Sciences/Sociology
  4. Click on PsycINFO
  5. Once in the database, click on Specific Databases
  6. Put a check mark next to both ERIC and PsycINFO.
  7. Click on Continue to Search
  8. Once you are back at the search screen, put a check mark in the box labeled Journal Articles only. This will eliminate retrieving ERIC documents.
  9. Enter your search terms. Tip: In the second row, be sure to change Title to Keyword
  10. Click on Search

Empirical research is drawn from observation or experience. There is no quick and easy way to find these types of articles.

When reading the abstract there are some keywords you can look for to determine if an article is an empirical study:

  • Methods / Methodology
  • Participants
  • Study
  • Results / Conclusions
  • Discussion
