Information on Mines and Mining in The UCR Science Library

This publication is a guide to locating mining information resources in the UC Riverside Libraries particularly with reference to Southern California and Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties. This guide is not exhaustive and the references at the ends of all publications should also be consulted.

GENERAL MINING INFORMATION on all California counties published in the Reports of the State Mineralogist, Journal of the California Division of Mines and Geology and the County Report Series, is shown on the table and map attached to this guide. These publications provide primary resources for historical information.

BOOKS and REPORTS can be located by using MELVYL, the UC's on-line catalog. Use the subject headings: "Mineral Industries; Mines and Mineral Resources: Mining Claims; Mining Districts; Mining Engineering; Mining Geology; Mining Law; or Mining Machinery. Mines and Mineral Resources can also have geographic additions by county and state. Also specific minerals can be searched by subject in the MELVYL catalog, but to prevent overload searches, restrict by state or county.

UCR map collections are not typically included in the MELVYL database. If you are looking for maps, use the Geomap Database, which is available at selected library stations, or in the Map Collection on the Ground Floor.

MINING CLAIM INFORMATION is recorded at the County Recorders Office in the respective county. Telephone numbers are listed in Discovery Location Recordation and Assessment Work for Mining Claims and Sites in California (Ref TN224 C2 D47). The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) also has microfiche copies of Federal Land Status Maps which are searchable by township and range. The nearest BLM office is 6221 Box Springs Blvd., Riverside, CA 92507, telephone (951) 697-5300.

Most publications listed are located in the Science Library in either the reference section (Ref), the book stacks, or the secured collection (SC). Exceptions are indicated by (RIV), Rivera Library, or the Government Publications Department (GP) situated on the 4th floor of Rivera Library. To access materials in the secured collection, bring the call number to the Science Library Circulation Desk. Fiche is located primarily in room 144 (fiche printing is available in the copy center)
