Using Scotty

Use Scotty to find materials in the Rivera, Science, Music Library, and Media Libraries. The UCR Library Catalog includes information about each item including its location and circulation status.

  • Click on Scotty at or go to
  • For help, consult the online help screens or ask at a reference desk.
  • Don't use Scotty to find periodical articles.Use the Article databases available from the library home page.

Finding books in Scotty

Ways of Searching

Title Search

If you know the exact title of the book you are looking for:

  1. Click on the arrow next to the word Keyword and select Title/Periodical Title
  2. Enter the Exact Beginning of the title or the complete title in the middle box  
  3. Click Go
Author Search
  1. Click on the arrow next to the word Keyword and select Author. 
  2. Enter the author in Last name, First name format.
  3. Click Go.
Keyword Search

Unless you know the exact title, author or Library of Congress subject heading for your book(s), it is best to use Word. When you find a book that is useful, you may click on the subject of that book to do a search for others like it.

  1. Enter significant words you would hope to find in your title (e.g. matrix theory)
  2. Click Go.

Limiting your search

If you get too many results, you can click on the Modify Search button at the top of the page. You can limit by year of location, publication, format etc... 

You can also limit to a particular library, or to journals or electronic resources by selecting the arrow next to All UCR Libraries on the search or results screen. Then just press Go.


  • If you would like more information about the book, click on the titles of the item(s) that interest you.
  • Find the call number on a Library map.
  • Hint: When you get your results, try clicking the subject heading of interesting books to find more like it.
Printing and E-mailing results

If you would like to print multiple results or email results:

  1. Click the checkbox next to interesting titles in the results display
  2. Click on "Add Marked to Bag"

Or Click "Add to Bag" when you are looking at a record you would like to save. 

When you are ready to print or email,

  1. Click on "View Bag" at the top of your Scotty screen

  2. Click on "Export Saved" at the top of the screen.

  3. Choose between emailing, printing and saving.
    • To email, select Email and enter requested information
    • To print, select Screen and use your browser to print
    • To save, select Local Disk
      • If you would like to import the records into EndNote, selct the EndNote/RefWorks format.
  4. Select the record(s) you would like to export, or choose save all.
  5. Submit

If you would like to clear your list, click on Clear Saved Records

Finding Journals in Scotty

  1. Journals can be found by keyword or call number, but the most common way to look for them is by title.  Select Title/Periodical Title' from the quick search drop down menu
  2. Select Periodicals from the limiter menu
  3. Enter the journal title in the center box.  You can enter abbreviated titles, but words must be in the right order.
  4. Click Go
  5. Find the journal you are looking for and click on it
  6. There may be two records for your journal, one electronic and one print.  You may need to look at both to find the year(s) you are looking for. 
  7. Click on correct link (by year) to go to the journal online / For print journals in the last year, they will be alphabetical by title in the current periodicals.  If they are older, get the call# and find the Call number location on the map.
