LAUC PROFESSIONAL GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE
SURVEY OF MEMBERS

The LAUC Committee on Professional Governance has been charged with preparing a report with recommendations and justifications for restructuring the Librarian salary scale. In order to gather data about the activity and qualifications of UC librarians, a survey was designed to address issues that are related to the determination of salaries. (Appendix A.) The survey was distributed via email to all LAUC members. Two hundred twenty-three responses, 47% of possible returns, were received. (Figure 1.)
The results show an incredible amount of activity in the areas defined as Criteria 2-4 for librarian reviews (i.e., involvement in professional organizations, publication, post-graduate education). 78% of the respondents have published a book, article, review, book chapter, or edited a journal or column in the last 5 years. 66% have held office in a professional organization in the last 5 years. Only one respondent did not list any professional organization membership. The range of organizations is quite broad, ranging from the American Library Association to Société Francaise de Traducteurs. (Appendix B and Appendix C.)
