APPENDIX VI
CSU Salary Scale Information
Provided by Cynthia Jahns (UCSC)
The three ranks in the CSU librarian series are:
There are salary scales for 10-month positions and for 12-month positions. CSU librarians may apply to the university librarian to request which amount of time they wish to work.
On the page you see an "Assistant" series, but it is not in use.
You also see numbers in a box at the top of the Senior Assistant series, and these salaries are also not used.
New librarians are usually hired at Senior Assistant Step 1 ($43,584). This can be negotiated so that the new person is hired at a higher step.
At the end of each year, you move up a step (a one-year cycle).
After 4 years in a rank, you are eligible for promotion. For example, when you become a Senior Assistant Step 5, you are automatically considered for promotion. You may request a postponement if needed.
You may apply for early promotion, but may only do so once within each rank.
You must get tenure in your 6th year. If you don’t, you’re allowed a 7th year during which to find another job.
Usually you would go for promotion and tenure at the same time. However, it is possible to request promotion (for example from Senior Assistant to Associate) after the 4th year, but before going for tenure in the 6th year.
After receiving tenure, you are only reviewed every 5 years. You are then reviewed only on primary job responsibilities, not on professional development or other outside activities.
Note the asterisks to the left of step 11 in the Senior Assistant series, step 15 in the Associate series, and step 9 in the Librarian series. The routine advancement from step to step ends at these starred steps. Advancement to further steps only occurs via the merit system.
There is a relatively new (in the last 3 years) merit system in place, called "Performance Salary Step Increase." To move past step 15 in the Associate series, you must apply for a PSSI. A committee reviews the applications and makes recommendations. There is a special pot of money to fund PSSIs. The committee decides whether or not to award an increase, and can award more than one step per person (limit is 5). At some CSUs, the final decision is made within the library; at others, the committee’s recommendations go to the campus administration. There is an appeal process available.
