Water and Food Security: World Water Day 2012

Why is Water Important to Food Security?                             

• Water is key to food security.
• Food security exists when all people at all times have both physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their dietary requirements for an active and healthy life.
• People who have better access to water tend to have better levels of nourishment.
• Lack of water can be a major cause of famine and malnutrition.
• Drought is the most common cause of severe food shortages in developing countries.
• The human right to food depends heavily on access to natural resources, including water.
• Large quantities of water are needed to produce food.
• Climate change increases risks of extremes of water availability.
• The gender gap in agriculture limits yields; women have unequal access to services and resource inputs.
• Water resources are scarce.
• The competition for water is increasing.
• Land and water resources are degraded.

Water Security for Food Security: Solutions

• Produce more with less water: sustainable intensification.
• Prepare for climate change and natural disasters.
• Protect water resources.
• Practice conservation agriculture.
• Promote use of forests to capture and regulate water. Forests reduce the effects of floods and droughts and prevent soil erosion, landslides, desertification and salinization.
• Re-use and recycle water.
• Cut food waste and losses.
• Improve the integration of different production systems.
• Opt for sustainable and healthy diets.
