Incorporating the Library into Your iLearn Course

 

Rivera Library Services

  • Collaboration on assignments which require research or information gathering.
  • Course-specific guides to help your students navigate the literature in the field.
  • Database searching aids that students can refer to while using one of our many online sources.
  • Instructive handouts which show students how to "do" something, such as evaluate Internet sites, develop search strategies, avoid plagiarism, or cite resources.
  • Supplemental reading lists, filmographies, etc.
  • Virtual instruction & chat about the research process and information tools.

Below are samples of how a Librarian and faculty collaborated to incorporate library skills into course assignments using iLearn. These worksheets were posted to the iLearn course by the Librarian and used in conjunction with a course-related library instruction session.

These were CHASS Connect courses. 

Resources & Tools

  • Link to SCOTTY, the UCR library catalog, as well as to specific search results.
You can link directly to SCOTTY using http://scotty.ucr.edu, or you can link to specific search results by following the steps below:
  • Link to course reserves
  • Spotlight full-text articles available through the Library's vast collection of Electronic Journals and electronic reserves.
    You can link to the records for the material you have placed on reserve for your course.

The Library subscribes to numerous E-Journals that allow linking to specific articles. More information on E-Journals can be found at http://library.ucr.edu/?view=find/findejournals.html&c=1.

  • Point to online tutorials which orient students to the research process.
  • The MAGician tutorial provides a general orientation to research in an academic library.
  • The Life Sciences tutorial teaches students how to do research in the sciences, specifically in the Biological Abstracts database, Melvyl, and SCOTTY.
  • The OVID tutorial guides users through the use of some of the commonly used features of the OVID web interface used to search Compendex, Biosis, Inspec, and MLA International Bibliography.
  • Highlight academic Internet sites found in INFOMINE that have been reviewed and annotated by librarians.
