May 30 Lecture: Reinterpreting History in the Colorado River Delta

Reinterpreting the History of Water, Agribusiness, Labor and Binational Relations in the Colorado River Delta before WWII

Presented by Benny Andrés, an Assistant Professor of History and Latin American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he teaches classes on Latino history, history of the American West, the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, and U.S. immigration history. His doctoral thesis from the University of New Mexico received the W. Turrentine Jackson Dissertation Award from the Pacific Coast Branch of the American Historical Association. Dr. Andrés has published articles in the Southern California Quarterly and California History. His book manuscript, Imperial Valley: Nature, Agribusiness and Workers on the California Borderland, 1900-1940, is under contract with Texas A&M University Press, Connecting the Greater West Series. He will be speaking on his second book project, which examines the political, economic and environmental implications of the distribution of water along the Imperial-Mexicali Valley borderlands and the Colorado River delta from 1900 to 1940 and how the Water Resources Collections and Archives have contributed to his work.
