Courageous Girls

According to the judges Ms. Quon’s entry demonstrated the “story of ‘courageous girls’ that overcome obstacles to triumph in the face of adversity. The items in this collection span nearly a century, with the earliest edition from 1905, and provided a rather comprehensive look at the history and impact of the ‘courageous girl’ in literature during the 20th century.” Her thoughtfully written statement and detailed annotations revealed “the impact that these stories have had on her life and how they have also helped to shape her reading interests.”

2013 Graduate Winner

Elias Serna

Chicano Movement Polemics: Pocho Poems, Posters, Films and Revolutionary Plans

According to the judges Mr. Serna has “assembled a vast collection of hard to find, unique books that extensively document the Chicana/o Movement. The addition of non-book material such as art catalogs and films help to further augment this already exceptional collection providing it with additional depth.” His entry contained detailed and insightful annotations that “effectively conveyed the importance of this collection to him and also demonstrated this material’s significance to Chicana/o Movement scholarship.”
