Temporary access to HathiTrust scanned books ends Sept. 7

As campus prepares to reopen for fall quarter, on September 7, the library will retire some remote services established during the pandemic closure, such as Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS) through HathiTrust.

“While campuses and libraries remained closed during 2020 and 2021, HathiTrust ETAS was a crucial partner to help us provide access to more than 10 million scanned books from our collections and those of libraries at other UC campuses,” said Carla Arbagey, Collection Strategist for Arts & Humanities. “Now that the University of California system is preparing to reopen campuses for fall quarter, patrons will once again be able to access our physical collections.”

Until Sept. 6, you can continue to access HathiTrust ETAS using these steps:

  1. Go to hathitrust.org and select the yellow “LOG IN” button.
  2. Select University of California, Riverside from the list of partner institutions. Select “Continue."
  3. You will arrive at UCR’s Central Authentication Service. Enter your UCR NetID and Password.
  4. When you have successfully logged in, you will be returned to the HathiTrust website.

Review the HathiTrust FAQ and Use Guide before you get started.

After Sept. 7, UCR Library’s print collections that had been accessible remotely through HathiTrust ETAS will be available for physical checkout. Please submit a paging request for materials through your library account.

However, HathiTrust still has millions of digitized, non-copyrighted items available and those will remain available remotely through its regular (non-ETAS) service parameters.
