Activism through Time: Transformative Protests and Movements from the 1940s - 2000s

The student posters presented here are the culminating work of undergraduate History majors enrolled in Dr. Kendra Gage’s Fall 2025 course, HIST 197: Years of Protest.

Each capstone project examines a distinct protest, movement, or uprising from the 1940s through 2009, tracing the diverse forms of collective action that shaped — and reshaped — the modern world.

Across the posters, key themes emerge, including demands for government accountability, the pursuit of justice, and the mobilization of communities seeking profound social, political, and cultural change. Many of these movements were propelled by youth and marginalized groups who confronted state resistance, censorship, and violence.

While rooted primarily in the history of the United States, this display also acknowledges movements across Latin America, Southeast Asia, and both Western and Eastern Europe. These movements did not arise in isolation; they were responses to shared frustrations, interconnected inspirations, and global currents of dissent.

The posters presented here reflect the movements students chose to investigate — amplifying activists’ messages, honoring their legacies, and demonstrating how collective action continues to shape our understanding of resistance and change.
