Information for K-12 Class Visits to the UCR Library
Elementary Class Visits (K-5)
Elementary class visits to the UCR Library may be arranged. Library staff will work with you to arrange a visit that aligns with your goals.
Due to space limitations, field trips are limited to groups of 65. For more information, or to arrange a visit, please contact Teaching & Learning Services.
Middle and High School Class Visits (6-12)
Students of middle and high school age may use UCR Library materials for research and school projects. Classes that we have supported in the past include:
AP Research
International Baccalaureate
National History Day projects
Teachers may schedule instruction sessions for their classes to receive instruction in finding UCR Library books, articles, and other resources. If your school has a credentialed Teacher Librarian on staff, we highly recommend that this staff person be included in planning for a UCR Library visit. To determine if such a session would be helpful for your students, think about how close they may live to campus and how likely they may be to visit the Library on their own for further research. Students will not have remote access to Library electronic resources, and they likely will not be able to check out print materials unless they wish to purchase a community borrowers card.
Students of this age may enjoy field trips to the UCR Library Special Collections & University Archives. Collections housed here that may be of interest include the Eaton Collection of Science Fiction & Fantasy, the Tuskegee Airmen Celebration collection and the Tomás Rivera Archive.
Please contact the Library’s department of Teaching & Learning at LibTeaching@ucr.edu to discuss your goals for a library visit and what learning activities may best meet these goals.
Scheduling an Instruction Session
Sessions should be scheduled at least 3 weeks in advance and may be scheduled up to 3 months in advance. Preferred times for K-12 visits are between quarters at UCR, or during the last 2-3 weeks of an academic quarter, since these are times when the Library Teaching & Learning Department has more availability.
Other Resources for K-12 Students
For students who may be less able or likely to return to the UCR Library on their own, we do provide a guide to recommended sources of information on the web that your students will be able to use from any location with internet access.
