Unexpected Artifacts

More Past Exhibits UCR SCUA Staff

Over decades of care, UCR Special Collections & University Archives (SCUA) has accumulated materials the public (and even sometimes SCUA staff) may not expect to find in a library.

From protest armbands to ballet shoes and family quilts to Cuban cigars, the selections on display in this exhibit demonstrate the rich diversity of materials available within our collections. Capturing unique moments, exchanges, and encounters, sometimes joyful, sometimes somber or strange, these materials represent aspects of our eclectic past and future.

UCOP presents Osuna digital collection to Mexico’s Ministry of Culture

More News

One of the noteworthy resources housed in the UCR Library’s Special Collections & University Archives is an assortment of glass plate negatives, photographs, and lantern slides taken by photographer Sabino Osuna.

Created during the years 1910 to 1914, Osuna’s images feature prominent figures in the Mexican Revolution, including Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata, Francisco Madero, Victoriano Huerta, Alvaro Obregon, and others.

Osuna’s photographs also depict soldiers engaged in guerrilla warfare on the streets of Mexico City during La Decena Trágica, a ten-day period from February 9 and February 19, 1913 that resulted in a coup d’état and the assassinations of the Mexican president and vice president.

A copy of the full Osuna digital photograph catalog was presented to Mexico’s Secretary of Culture by UC Board of Regents Chair Monica Lozano in a hand-made box.

The presentation ceremony was held on March 29, 2017 during a reception at the University of California’s facility in Mexico City, called Casa de California.

“California and Mexico share a long and rich tradition of arts and culture,” UC President Janet Napolitano commented. “It’s with great pleasure that we provide the ministry with access to the Osuna collection as a symbol of our continued partnership on issues of cultural significance.”

Now, students, historians, and community members in Mexico will also have local access to his rich cultural record.

UC Riverside students, staff, faculty, and community members are invited to visit Special Collections on the fourth floor of Tomás Rivera Library to view the Osuna collection in person. The images can also be viewed online using Calisphere.

First in the Nation: A History of the Costo Library

More Current Exhibits Image of a painted sky and green mountains

The Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian is a testament to the advocacy, expertise and legacy of its founders.

Rupert Costo (Cahuilla) and his wife Jeannette Henry-Costo (Eastern Cherokee) have supported UCR since its founding, even helping advocate for a UC campus to be built in Riverside in the first place. They believed in the power of education, and fought for Native American students to have equal access to education throughout their lives. In addition to helping bring a UC campus to Riverside, the Costos co-founded the American Indian Historical Society in San Francisco, and helped organize the First Convocation of the American Indian Scholars, a pivotal moment in the development of the field of Native American Studies. Throughout their lives, the Costos have been on the forefront of expanding access and representation of Native peoples in higher education. This legacy is deeply embodied in all three aspects of the endowment they gifted to UCR: their personal book collection, which forms the Costo Library of the American Indian, as well as their archives and their vision for the Costo Chair in American Indian History (now Affairs).

This exhibit documents the history of the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, located on the 4th floor of the Tomás Rivera Library in Special Collections & University Archives. View this exhibit and learn more about the Costos, the American Indian Historical Society, and why the Costos chose UCR to house their materials.

A History of the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian at UC Riverside

More News Image of Sandy Enriquez and attendees at the reception for the exhibit First in the Nation: A History of the Costo Library

One of the newest exhibits on display in Special Collections & University Archives (SCUA) is First in the Nation: A History of the Costo Library

This exhibit offers a deeply personal and historical look at the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian. Curated by Sandy Enriquez, Special Collections Public Services Outreach and Community Engagement Librarian, the exhibit reflects the lifelong dedication of Rupert and Jeanette Costo to activism, scholarship, and the preservation of Native American heritage. The exhibit is on display through the end of winter quarter 2025 in the Costo Library, located on the 4th floor of the Tomás Rivera Library in SCUA.

Enriquez curated the exhibit, while Christian Bean, the UCR Library’s Conservator, carried out the physical installation. Together, they created an experience that highlights the Costos’ enduring legacy. One standout feature is a rare photograph of a young Rupert Costo holding a bundle of quail. This image is paired with his short story, Song of the Quail, which tells the story of a young Cahuilla boy on a journey of self-discovery. “Seeing it in juxtaposition with Costo's photograph, it really feels like you can trace where the inspiration for this story might have come from,” Enriquez said.

The exhibit’s opening reception earlier this month brought the community together in a meaningful way. Guided tours allowed attendees to explore the exhibit in-depth while engaging with Native faculty, students, and community members. Sandy expressed her gratitude to Dr. Clifford Trafzer, Costo Chair in American Indian Affairs, and William Madrigal, doctoral student and Cahuilla language professor, for their input on the exhibit and reception. A particularly touching moment was the attendance of Mara Costo, Rupert Costo’s niece, and her family. The event also generated enthusiasm among Native faculty and community members to digitize the Costo Library dedication cassette tapes, reinforcing the library’s commitment to preserving and sharing Indigenous histories.

Enriquez hopes visitors will leave with a deeper understanding of the Costo Library’s significance. “The Costo Library is not just a study space; it is the physical manifestation of a lifetime of activism, scholarship, and foresight from the Costos. This is an important part of UCR’s history that we should not forget or overlook,” she said.

This exhibit also reflects the broader mission of the Costo Library: to serve as a hub for rigorous research in Native American Studies. Enriquez envisions this as the first of many future exhibits in the space, each continuing the legacy of the Costos by fostering public scholarship and advancing knowledge.

Through First in the Nation, UCR honors the Costos’ invaluable contributions to the field of Native American Studies. The exhibit invites visitors to engage with a history that remains deeply relevant today.
