Janet spent her professional career creating or using a variety of geographic data. Prior to coming to UC Riverside, the bulk of her career was spent at Aerial Information Systems Inc. (AIS), an environmental consulting firm in Redlands, California that specializes in geospatial data development. Among her duties at AIS were photointerpretation of land use and vegetation; compiling various types of geographic data into geographic information systems (GIS); project management; quality control; data assessment; and report writing. Many of the projects completed by AIS covered portions of the Inland Empire or southern California, and some were performed as a subcontractor to the GIS software giant Esri.
Janet also has experience as a planner handling mapping projects and demographic data for the San Bernardino County Planning Department, and she worked for Rome Research Corporation as a photointerpreter.
She holds a BS in natural resources from Cornell University and an MS in physical geography from Oregon State University, where she worked in the Environmental Remote Sensing Applications Laboratory.
In her new role, Janet looks forward to connecting UCR community members to the geospatial information they need.
Support the UCR Library on Give Day!

Mark your calendars, UCR Give Day is March 4-5, 2025!
This annual fundraising event is a chance for the Highlander community to rally behind key campus initiatives, and the UCR Library is excited to participate.
This year, the UCR Library is raising money for two critical funds:
- Raymond L. Orbach Library Endowed Fund, which supports the acquisition of new science and engineering resources such as databases, journals, and books.
- Creat’R Lab Fund, which helps expand technology offerings in our makerspace, the Creat’R Lab. The Creat’R Lab Team is hoping to purchase a new resin printer that will enable more precise and durable 3D printing projects—perfect for engineering, medical, and design applications.
Give Day is a fully digital campaign. If you’re on the UCR Library’s contact list, you’ll receive a text message or email on March 4 with links to our Give Day pages. Want to make a difference today? You can make a gift early by visiting our Give Day landing page. You can also donate to any of our funds at library.ucr.edu/giving.
If you have any questions or would prefer to make a donation in another form, please contact the UCR Library’s Senior Director of Development Shannon Castro via email or call/text her at (626) 378-1424.

Publishing Options: Some Important Issues to Know
Thursday, October 24, 2019
Time: 3:30pm - 4:30pm
Instructor: Swati Bhattacharyya
Publishing in a good journal is an indicator of the scholarly achievement of a researcher and one of the most challenging targets in the scholarly world. Many stakeholders such as funding agencies and University of California, however, have already brought a mandate of opening the scholarship for all. The mandate is often referred to as open access policy. There are several myths surrounding this policy. In this session, we will discuss how such a policy can be respected without compromising the quality of scholarship, what are various publishing options and how you can reach your readers widely and quickly.
Celebrate Preservation Week at the UCR Library

Join us for free events and workshops dedicated to preserving the past, safeguarding the present, and ensuring the future of our collective histories and personal memories.
Preservation Week is an initiative to raise awareness about the importance of preservation in our community, focusing this year on preserving identities. We invite you to partake in a series of engaging events at the library, designed to educate, inspire, and empower everyone to play a role in preserving their own cherished items and stories.
Event schedule:
Monday, April 29
- Preservation in the Library | 1 - 3 p.m. | Rivera, 1st Floor
- Stop by and learn about preservation in the library at our tabling event. We will explain what preservation is, why it is important, and what we currently do in the library to keep our items safe. This year’s theme is Preserving Identities and we invite you to bring all your questions about how to keep your own beloved items safe. Also, you can bring a printed copy of a photo of something or someone you love to turn it into a button on our button machine.
Wednesday, May 1
- Make Your Own Journal | 1 - 3 p.m. | Orbach, 1st Floor
- Come join us and learn how to make a soft cover pamphlet journal. These easy-to-make journals are handy for taking notes or sketching. They are also a great way to learn what goes into making books. But be careful…you might end up really liking it too much and start making your own later. Promptness is important to keep the process as smooth as possible so everyone can enjoy the experience. All supplies will be provided. No previous craftiness required.
Thursday, May 2
- Tape Removal Obstacle Course | 1 - 3 p.m. | Rivera, 1st Floor
- Come learn about tape, and all the ways books and paper have suffered since its invention. We will have a practical hands on exercise to remove ‘archival’ tapes and see if they truly live up to the hype of being removable. We will also talk through good ways to repair your paper or hold things together.
