Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian
Located in: Special Collections & University Archives
Thousands of books, documents, and audio recordings documenting Native American history and culture form the Rupert Costo Library of the American Indian, making it a center for studies about the native people of inland Southern California, the Southwest, and North America.
Rupert and Jeannette Henry Costo, Native American scholars, activists, and founders of the American Indian Historical Society, gave the collection to UCR in 1986.
New PNAS Agreement: Updated Open Access Publishing Terms for Authors

The University of California has renewed its open access publishing agreement with the National Academy of Sciences.
While UC authors can continue to publish open access in PNAS at a discounted rate, the article processing charge (APC) will increase annually over the course of the three-year agreement due to changes in PNAS’s universal pricing structure. The APC under the previous agreement was set at $3,000, and in year 1 of the new agreement (for the rest of 2024), it will increase to $3,225.
While the UC libraries and authors will both experience somewhat higher costs under the new agreement, the APC for UC authors remains $2,000 below the standard APC for immediate open access publishing in PNAS. This discount is automatically applied for all UC-affiliated corresponding authors.
For questions about publishing open access with PNAS, please contact UCR Library STEM Collection Strategist Michele Potter.
Science Library Pathway Project Construction Alert
UC Riverside's Architects and Engineers office announced a construction project that will impact areas surrounding Orbach Science Library, scheduled to begin on June 19, 2017.
The project's work hours will be from 7:00 am to 4:00 pm on weekdays, and will consist of removing, replacing, and modifying the existing concrete path across East Campus Drive.
This project will include the addition of a new ramp and concrete path between the Chemical Sciences building and Orbach Science Library, Physics, and School of Medicine building by adding a raised pathway where pedestrians cross East Campus Drive.
East Campus Drive will remain open for most of the project with a limited closure affecting drivers. A detour route will be provided and published in the next few weeks, to minimize delays. Any closures will be specifically defined in future construction project alerts.
In all instances, the Contractor will monitor activities in order to minimize any impacts to campus operations.
The UC Riverside Architects & Engineers team recognizes that construction activities will at times post inconveniences and disruption to the surrounding neighborhood. They appreciate your patience during construction of this project.
Please direct any questions regarding this construction project to Fernando Nunez, Jr., Project Manager, Architects & Engineers at fernando.nunez@ucr.edu.

Rivera Library Adds Gender-Inclusive Restroom
When the hashtag #UCRStandsTogether appeared on social media last month, the UCR Library joined in solidarity with other UC Riverside departments to demonstrate our commitment to inclusiveness and appreciation of diversity.
The latest addition to our library facilities reinforces our commitment to those values. A gender-inclusive restroom has been added to the second floor of Rivera Library, just past the Education Services desk (room A0211). Facilities completed installation of signage for this restroom on Tuesday, March 7, 2017.
To find other gender-inclusive restrooms, students, staff and faculty can visit the UCR campus map and zoom in until you see a symbol with a triangle inside a circle. Room number details will become visible when users click on the symbol. ADA compliant facilities information is also shown on the online campus map.
These facility renovations were added in response to a 2016 directive from the UC Office of the President, Janet Napolitano, requiring all UC campuses to offer a list of gender-inclusive restrooms and changing rooms with updated signage. The University of California standard is a gender inclusive restroom inside every building, or within a nearby building. Nearby is defined as a two-minute walk away.
Additional resources for those seeking gender-inclusive facilities are available on the LGBT resource center’s website.
How Do I Find - Standardized Test Preparations
UCR Library collects standardized test preparation manuals to help students study.
Use the UC Catalog Search to search by keyword for particular kinds of tests, such as GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc.You can also add a subject term, for example "GRE and chemistry", to find manuals for specific subject tests.
History
The College of Letters and Science Library (later renamed to the Tomás Rivera Library) was one of the original five buildings at UCR. Designed by Graham Latta and Carl Denny, the building was completed in December 1953 and opened when classes began at UCR in February 1954. The original 33,000 volume collection consisted of the Citrus Experiment Station library and materials compiled by Edwin T. Coman Jr., UCR's first University Librarian, to support the university's undergraduate teaching program.
