The UCR Library collects resources in the visual arts supporting both coursework and research conducted by our students and faculty.  We offer subject-specific and general research educational services at the library and provide access to information from the UC Libraries System and beyond.

Conducting Research

Books & Articles

Books are useful for all levels of research in art history. Search by topic keywords in the UCR catalog or the Melvyl (UC) catalog.

To find exhibition catalogs search ‘exhibitions’ and keywords, such as:
"Surrealism and exhibitions" or "Bernini and exhibitions"

To find catalogue raisonnés use ‘raisonne’ and artist in a keyword search such as:
          "John Baldessari and raisonne"

Scholarly articles are carefully evaluated (peer-reviewed) by subject experts to provide reliable and credible information. Locate art history articles by searching in the art history discipline databases. The most popular databases in art are listed on this page.

Specialized Resources

The field of art history utilizes dissertations, specialized encyclopedias, bibliographies, images, exhibition catalogues, catalogue raisonnés (scholarly compositions of an artist’s body of work), and festschriften (a volume of articles and essays, often written by colleagues, on a specific artist) to conduct research.
