The UCR Library has built an extensive collection of books, exhibition catalogs, catalogue raisonnés, and periodicals in the visual arts to support coursework and research by our students and faculty. We offer art and general research services at the library and provide access to information from the UC Libraries System and beyond. Most art materials are housed in the Tomás Rivera Library and can be paged to the Music Library located in the ARTS building for pick-up within 24-72 hours.

Conducting Research

Books & Articles

Books are useful for all levels of research in art. Search by topic keywords in the UCR catalog or the Melvyl (UC) catalog.

To find exhibition catalogs search ‘exhibitions’ and keywords, such as:
"Surrealism and exhibitions" or "Ruscha and exhibitions"

To find catalogue raisonnés use ‘raisonne’ and artist in a keyword search such as:
          "John Baldessari and raisonne"

Scholarly articles are carefully evaluated (peer-reviewed) by subject experts to provide reliable and credible information. Locate art articles by searching in the art discipline databases. The most popular databases are listed on this page.

Specialized Resources

The Library has collections relevant to the arts that are housed in the Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA), including the papers of Sadakichi Hartmann, one of the earliest critics of photography as art; 427 glass plate negatives, prints and lantern slides of the Mexican Revolution taken by Sabino Osuna; and a growing collection of artists' books. Items housed in SCUA are not available for check-out, but can be accessed in the reading room located on the 4th floor of the Tomás Rivera Library.

Dissertations & Theses
It is often helpful to use theses and dissertations written by artists as resources for research. Check out the UCR art dissertations to see what has been written by graduates of the UCR art program.
