Tuskegee Airmen Archive Luncheon Shows Gratitude to Donors and Servicemen

More News

Library thanks donors to the Tuskegee Airmen Archive.

On Saturday, June 6th, Chancellor Kim Wilcox and University Librarian Steven Mandeville-Gamble welcomed some of the donors who have contributed to the Tuskegee Airmen Archive Collection. In thanks for their generosity, donors were treated to a private luncheon and given a special look at the collection’s new permanent exhibit space in the lobby of the Tomás Rivera Library.

Four Documented Original Tuskegee Airmen were in attendance at the event: Flight Officer Alfonso Harris, Master Sergeant Buford Johnson, Lt. Col. Harlan Leonard, and Lt. Col. Ted Lumpkin. Co-founders of the Tuskegee Airmen Archive Dr. Ruth M. Jackson and Col. Ralph W. Smith noted the importance of the Tuskegee Airmen in U.S. history, their role in the integration of the military, and their outstanding contributions to the military record as well as to numerous other professional fields.

Donors to the Tuskegee Airmen Archive are invested in ensuring that the stories of these heroic men and women are accessible to students and scholars worldwide, and UCR Library staff are honored to take part in this historic preservation effort. A current exhibit in the Rivera Library highlights some of the preservation tools and methods utilized to care for the historic documents and items donated to Special Collections and Archives at the Library. Curator of African American Collections Bergis Jules also shared his thoughts in regards to these preservation efforts, the permanent exhibit, and the future of African American Collections at the University of California, Riverside.

“We had an outstanding time," remarked Ron Brewington, President of the Los Angeles Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. "We got the chance to meet some fabulous people who are doing a much-needed, tremendous job.”

McLeod Collection Aligns with Sikh Studies Award

More News

In early 2011, the UCR Library acquired the McLeod Collection of Sikh Studies from the widow of William Hewat “Hew” McLeod, a New Zealand scholar who wrote many books and essays about Sikh history, theology, and cultural identity.

This collection contains nearly 2,000 volumes devoted to topics including Sikh religion, culture, art, and history. Kuei Chiu, Head of Collection Development Department, oversaw the intake and Manuel Urrizola, Head of Metadata and Technical Services oversaw the cataloging of these items for the Library.

About half of McLeod’s collection is written in English, while the remainder are in Punjabi. UCR Library’s Music Cataloger Diane David and Serials Cataloging Librarian Sharon Scott completed cataloging of the English-language volumes six months after their initial receipt. The English items in the McLeod collection were immediately available for use.

The items in the Punjabi language were cataloged by external vendor Backstage, in collaboration with Librarian and Metadata and Technical Services Department Head Manuel Urrizola and Library Assistants Jim Clark and Cynthia “Kit” Rembert.

The entire collection was available for study and research by 2015.

With the exciting announcement by the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) of their Harkeerat and Deepta Dhillon Endowed Research Award for Sikh and Punjabi Studies in the Arts and Humanities, the Library looks forward to seeing an influx of visitors to the McLeod collection.

The Dhillon family’s $100,000 gift to CHASS is intended to support dissertation research and writing by doctoral candidates. Students majoring in history, religious studies, and philosophy are certain to benefit from these unique Library resources, as well as from the Dhillon’s generous contribution.

The McLeod Collection of Sikh Studies is housed in the Tomás Rivera Library. To view the full listing of items, use this link: http://bit.ly/ucrsikh

Finals Week Stress Relief: Spring 2020

More News

The UCR Library is committed to creating a supportive atmosphere for our students, as final exams can breed a lot of stress -- this quarter, even more so than most.

That is why we present our Finals Week Stress Relief (FWSR) event series: to serve and support students at UC Riverside.

This quarter, we had to take a different approach due to the campuswide COVID-19 closure, while maintaining our commitment to supporting R'Students.

Our FWSR committee has curated a list of activities and services that are available online, which we hope R'Students will enjoy, including Library Pets or "Virtual Fluffies" (to stand in for the crowd-favorite Therapy Fluffies), puzzles, escape rooms, relaxing videos, and valuable campus resources to support wellness!

More News

The results from UC Riverside's 2018 Day of Giving have been tallied and we're thrilled to report that, with your help, we raised $2,230 for the Creat'R Lab!

Way to go, Highlanders!

In case you missed it, here is one of the videos that we livestreamed from the Creat'R Lab on November 27, the Day of Giving. Fahed Elkhatib is a UCR student who uses the lab regularly and he's also a member of the Creat'R Lab's Steering Committee. He shared what he appreciates most about the Creat'R Lab:

The lives of R'Students and R'Faculty are directly impacted by our fundraising efforts, and they could ultimately become the greatest future champions for the Creat'R Lab -- because it makes a difference in their lives right now.

We thank everyone who supported the Creat'R Lab on UCR's Day of Giving! Everyone at the UCR Library sincerely appreciates your efforts as we worked together toward this goal.

We couldn't have done it without you!

NIH to Require Immediate Public Access to NIH-Funded Research

Revised policy ends 12-month embargo, aligns with federal open access directive

Starting July 1, 2025, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) requires that peer-reviewed journal articles resulting from NIH-funded research be made freely available to the public immediately upon publication, with no embargo period.

This update aligns with a 2022 White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) memo directing federal agencies to revise public access policies. The NIH’s updated policy (originally set for December 2025 but moved up) will bring research funded by the agency into full compliance with these new federal requirements.

UCR researchers and grant recipients can find full details and guidance on how to comply by visiting our Open Access LibGuide and going to the NIH’s Revised Public Access Policy tab.

If you have questions, you can contact the University of California's Office of Scholarly Communication at osc@ucop.edu or UCR Digital Scholarship Librarian Dr. Jing Han at jingh@ucr.edu.
