Known Catalog Issues
In order to provide our Faculty and students with an up-to-date progressive library collections discovery interface, the UCR Library made a major transition to a new catalog interface last year.
While this new interface provides us with a robust system, including opportunities for innovative features in the future, there are a couple of known issues which the company supplying the interface is currently working on rectifying. One such issue affects your ability to view our full electronic journal and book holdings easily when you perform a search.
When the library owns both an electronic copy of a journal through its UC-wide subscription and a local print copy of an item, the system is not overlaying correctly and results in the appearance that we either do not have the electronic item or the electronic version appears far down in the list.
This does NOT affect journals which we have purchased locally.
Temporary solutions
First try clicking on the “available online” option from the facet menu on the left hand side; this will sometimes ensure the electronic journal is at the forefront, other times it remains further down the results list.
If you are looking for a specific e-journal, try our A-Z journals list at ucelinks.cdlib.org/sfx_ucr/az.
If you are still unable to access the items you are looking for, please contact Carla Arbagey, Collection Strategist for Arts & Humanities and E-resources lead.
Ex Libris, the company, providing our catalog interface, has stated that this issue will be fixed in November 2019.

UC Library Search: Coming Soon to Libraries Near You
Finding and borrowing resources from libraries across the UC system is about to get easier!
On July 27, 2021, the libraries on all 10 University of California campuses will be connected through UC Library Search, a unified discovery and borrowing system.
The enhanced features of UC Library Search will replace Melvyl as the UC-wide library catalog search tool. As a single, interconnected system, UC Library Search offers powerful features to help the UC libraries make data-informed decisions around collections development and new services for library users.
Enhancements available through UC Library Search will include:
- Search UC Riverside local library collection as well as the collections of all 10 UC libraries in the same system;
- Single sign-on: Borrow and renew materials from any library in the UC system without retyping your library card number;
- Access via the catalog to millions of subscribed and Open Access online books, journal articles, and other digital content
Stay tuned to find out more information about UC Library Search in the coming months. In the meantime, check out this page for additional information about the project, including the project timeline for this new release.
Have questions? Please contact Tiffany Moxham, Associate University Librarian for Content and Discovery.
Support for Digital Scholarship
What is “Digital Scholarship”?
Digital scholarship is generally understood as the use of digital tools or methods for scholarly activities like research, teaching, and publishing.
The phrase “digital scholarship” can describe both the process of creating new, often fluid forms of scholarship using digital tools and computational methods, as well as the ever-evolving products of technology-dependent research. Digital scholarship is intensely collaborative, iterative, public-facing, interdisciplinary, community-engaged, and open.
The History of the LGBTQ Civil Rights Movement

In celebration of LGBT History Month and in partnership with the UCR LGBT Resource Center, the UCR Library will launch its new exhibition program with a poster display entitled The History of the LGBT Civil Rights Movement. Created by the ONE Archives Foundation located in West Hollywood, California the material "explores the incredibly inspiring journey of the LGBTQ Civil Rights movement" beginning in the 1940s. Accompanying the exhibit are books and scholarly work from UCR faculty in the area of LGBT Studies, and other related volumes from the UCR Library collection.
From the start of "gayborhoods," to the Lavender Scare, the Stonewall Riots, the national pride movement, and the AIDS crisis, The History of the LGBT Civil Rights Movement exhibition complements UCR's own history in supporting the LGBT community. In 1993, UCR was the first campus in the state of California to open a professionally-staffed LGBT resource center and, in 1996, the first to offer an LGBT studies minor. We are proud to be the first public university in the nation to offer gender-inclusive housing, to co-found T*Camp — the first intercampus retreat in the nation for trans/genderqueer and gender questioning college students, and to found the BlaqOUT Conference — the first college conference in the nation serving Black/African American students and students of African descent who identify on the LGBT spectrum.
The History of the LGBT Civil Rights Movement exhibition will open on October 12, 2015 in Rivera Library on the University of California, Riverside campus. For more information, please contact Sara Fitzgerald, Communications Stewardship Director for the UCR Library. *
Creat'R Lab launch event
The entrepreneurial spirit has a new home at UC Riverside: UCR Library will launch the Creat'R Lab on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.
A launch event is scheduled for Tuesday, April 18, 2017. Doors open at 4:30 PM. Program begins at 5:15 PM. Those interested in attending can RSVP here.
Creat'R Lab will be housed in the Orbach Science Library, rooms 140, 144, and 145, and will be an innovation space where UCR students can learn, experiment, design and create. This is where new technologies, scientific curiosity, and entrepreneurship come together to change the world.
Equipment will include 3D printers, 3D scanners and associated software, basic hand tools, electronics for prototyping, tools for working with textiles, and more. Experts (students, faculty, etc.) will provide individual consultations as well as workshops on tools, conceptual skills and entrepreneurship. There is a particular emphasis on students, who will be able to use this space both in conjunction with classroom projects and outside the classroom context.
University Librarian Steven Mandeville-Gamble and Vice Chancellor Michael Pazzani invite all UCR students, faculty, and staff to come explore, invent, and innovate in the Creat'R Lab.
Self-service laptop kiosks to launch in spring quarter
Self-service laptop kiosks will be available soon in the Rivera and Orbach Libraries, starting on Monday, April 15, 2019.
This new program, managed by campus Information Technology Solutions (ITS), will allow current UC Riverside students to check out laptop computers for up to 24 hours with a swipe of their R'Card.
In the recent library student survey, one student commented, "I would really benefit from the establishing a more reasonable way to check out laptops." Another said, "I think it would be useful to students if they had more laptops and computers to use."
This solution may be exactly what students like these are looking for.
In the future, ITS may expand the service to additional locations on campus, depending on user demand.
At this time, the Laptops Anytime program is not available to UCR faculty, staff, or community users -- only to currently registered UCR students. However, UCR staff and faculty can still check out laptops by visiting the Circulation / Reserves Desk in either library.
ITS has prepared this knowledge base article, which includes a how-to guide and FAQ about this new service. The full terms and conditions are also available online.
Support requests and questions should be addressed to BearHelp.
Soldadera: Creative Research in the Archives of the Mexican Revolution
On Jan. 21, UC Riverside professor Jennifer Doyle and internationally recognized artist Nao Bustamante will discuss the genesis of Bustamante’s multi-media exhibition, Soldadera.
This virtual presentation will be the fourth installment of the UCR Library’s series, Faculty Profiles in Research, Art and Innovation. Dr. Romina Robles Ruvalcaba, assistant professor of history at UC Merced, will serve as moderator.
Soldadera (Spanish for “female soldiers”) returns to southern California on Jan. 21, and will remain open through Mar. 28, 2021 at the S/A Exhibitions gallery in Santa Ana. The exhibition highlights a variety of Bustamante’s artwork inspired by the women who fought in the Mexican Revolution, including artistic transformations of several digitized photographs from UCR Library’s Special Collections. Since its debut in 2015 at the Vincent Price Art Museum in East Los Angeles, it has traveled to New York, Mexico City, San Diego, San Francisco, and Marfa.
In 2014, Bustamante turned to UCR's extensive collection of photography and other materials covering the Mexican Revolution, focused particularly on women's role in this segment of Mexican history. Doyle curated this exhibition and supported it by editing a series of essays published on KCET's website, exploring the artist's process and the historical context for this project, born from a 2015 meeting between Bustamante and Leandra Becerra Lumbreras in Guadalajara. During the Mexican Revolution, Lumbreras served as an Adelita, providing quartermaster support for revolutionary fighters. When they first met in 2015, Lumbreras was the oldest living person at age 127.
The exhibition opening at the S/A Exhibitions gallery is scheduled for 4:00 - 10:00 p.m. on the same date as the virtual presentation, Jan. 21. Due to COVID-related restrictions, the opening reception will be limited to eight guests at a time. Those interested in scheduling a viewing time must email the gallery in advance.
