Primary Source Literacy Librarian for Special Collections and University Archives

More News

The UCR Library is pleased to announce that Robin M. Katz has assumed her new responsibilities as the Primary Source Literacy Librarian for Special Collections and University Archives.

This change reflects the continued awareness and emphasis within the world of special collections and archives of the increasing importance of primary source literacy.

As noted in the newly published SAA-RBMS Guidelines for Primary Source Literacy:

Primary sources provide compelling, direct evidence of human activity. Users who encounter primary sources gain a unique perspective on the subject they are studying, and an opportunity to learn firsthand how primary sources are used for original research. As users learn to successfully engage with primary sources, they also gain important skills that help them navigate the use of other information sources, and further develop their critical thinking skills.

Katz will serve as subject matter expert for primary source literacy and archives/special collections-based instruction and pedagogy. She will continue to teach classes and to support other learning experiences, and she is available to all library staff members for internal consultations, support, and collaborations around teaching & learning with unique and original materials.

Katz will also identify and highlight primary sources held in and outside of the library (in special and general collections, through databases and other subscriptions, at other institutions, on the open web, and in private hands) that are relevant to UCR library users, contribute to collection development, and develop reusable tools and resources for using these materials. She looks forward to working on projects that facilitate the discovery, understanding, and use of primary sources across and beyond UCR.

Please join us in congratulating Robin on her new role!

Creat’R Lab to celebrate first anniversary

More News

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) — In the past year, nearly 1,300 aspiring entrepreneurs and creative types have occupied a new makerspace at the University of California, Riverside.

The space is UCR’s Creat’R Lab, set to celebrate its first Anniversary Showcase on Thursday, May 3 in the Orbach Science Library.

Users of the Creat’R Lab have spanned majors from science and engineering to medicine, from entrepreneurship to arts and humanities. In the lab, they have created projects including foam-sculpted costume armor, stop-motion animation videos, business plans, and short video pitches for investors.

In 12 months, the Creat’R Lab has hosted 187 workshops on a wide variety of topics led by student organizations. The lab has also provided space for RED entrepreneurs-in-residence to mentor UCR students in the NSF I-Corps Startups for Innovators program.

On May 3, several student groups will display projects made in the Creat’R Lab, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) student branch at UCR, Cross Campus Entrepreneurs, Studio Riverside, Cosplay Brigade, and the Origami Club.

Creat’R Lab staff will give demonstrations in virtual reality with the Oculus Rift headset and will show visitors how to build objects using electronic building blocks. Others staff will lead crafts in which guests can make a button and a Scotty the Bear necklace.

“Having the Creat’R Lab in the UCR Library creates opportunities that wouldn’t exist if it were embedded elsewhere,” said University Librarian Steve Mandeville-Gamble. “It’s a campuswide resource that students can use even when they’re not enrolled in classes.”

The UCR Library and the Office of Research and Economic Development (RED) launched Creat’R Lab in April 2017. It was conceived as a hands-on learning space where students can collaborate across academic disciplines.

At the Creat’R Lab Anniversary Showcase, Deputy University Librarian Ann Frenkel and Director of Entrepreneurship for RED Michalis Faloutsos will provide welcome remarks. UCR students Alondra Gomez-Andrade, Christopher Fleming, and Gustavo Correa will participate in a panel discussion about how student organizations use the Creat’R Lab.

Research staff and faculty members Christodoulos Kyriakopoulos and Mzilikazi Kone will share examples from their own research, including 3D-printed earthquake fault models and a collaborative zines project for two ethnic studies classes.

UCR Library’s Director of Research Services Brianna Marshall will also introduce inaugural members of the Creat’R Lab’s Steering Committee.

The Anniversary Showcase will take place on Thursday, May 3 from 4-6 p.m. at Orbach Science Library. Light refreshments will be served.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP: https://creatrlab-anniversary.eventbrite.com

Library highlights the Creat'R Lab for UCR's Day of Giving

More News

On Tuesday, November 27, UC Riverside will hold its 2018 online Day of Giving, and the UCR Library will be highlighting the Creat’R Lab Fund.

This is a unique, online fundraising opportunity that lasts only 24 hours, and we will need all the help we can get to spread the word about raising money for this inspiring and inclusive space in the Library. If you've never had a chance to visit, the Creat’R Lab is an open, inclusive makerspace where R’Students can create, collaborate and experience hands-on learning with emerging technologies.

There are two ways you can help:

Option one: You can share news on social media or by email to help us get the word out about Day of Giving and the Creat'R Lab in particular. Be sure to tag us (@ucrlibrary on InstagramTwitter or Facebook) and include the hashtags #GivingTueUCR and #CreatRLab in your post, so we can interact with you. It also helps if you tag a few friends who are UCR fans and who would like a place like the Creat'R Lab!

Use the buttons to the right to share easily by email, Facebook or Twitter.

Option two: Make a gift to support the Creat'R Lab using the button below. All gifts are tax-deductible and will directly benefit R'Students who use and love this engaging space!

Also...

We'll be broadcasting live from the Creat'R Lab on the Day of Giving from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., so you can see short snippets of life in the lab and hear directly from our students just why they love this space. Please join us @ucrlibrary on InstagramTwitter or Facebook on November 27 to witness these stories as they unfold in real time.

We hope to inspire our Highlander community to join together and give back, to show their R’Side pride and make a gift that supports student success and empowers curiosity and innovation in the Creat’R Lab.

Would you consider making a gift on November 27? We’ll have 24 hours to give, and every gift makes a difference!

Presentation inspires student to donate personal book collection

More News

A fall quarter 2020 library presentation inspired a current UC Riverside student to donate his personal book collection to Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA).

On Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020, Sandy Enriquez, Special Collections Public Services, Outreach & Community Engagement Librarian, and Andrew Lippert, Special Collections Processing Archivist, co-presented “On Slash Fanfiction and Yaoi Manga: Fandom and Sexuality in the Archives.”

During their presentation, Enriquez and Lippert gave a general introduction to the worlds of slash fanfiction and yaoi manga, also known as boys' love or BL; discussed how these items first arrived at the UCR Library and the emerging scholarship involving these important materials at UCR; and elucidated the reasons behind why the library hopes to collect more in the future.

“Slash and BL fandoms focus on romantic and/or sexual relationships between fictional male characters,” Enriquez explained. “Academic scholars have researched the impact and culture of slash and BL fandom for many years, but it wasn't until recently that they started incorporating a Feminist and Queer Theory lens to this research. From this lens, we now know that slash and BL fandoms are far more fluid and diverse than originally thought.”

The student donor, who wished to remain anonymous, shared what inspired him to gift his personal library to Special Collections: "I always thought that the history of our age would be written decades in the future, but attending a BL/slash event showed me that the work of analysis and preservation is happening now. That there was an enthusiastic community eager to delve into the whys and hows of something that has impacted my life. There are people that care enough about Boys Love and slash fiction to warrant a budding field of research. And I wanted to contribute to this wonderful project somehow, so I decided to make these books I've enjoyed available in the UCR Library."

According to Enriquez, other fans of slash or BL in the UC Riverside community are welcome to send their recommendations for this genre to SCUA staff at specialcollections@ucr.edu. “We hope to increase the BL manga collection at UCR and appreciate your suggestions,” she said.

The slash fanfiction and yaoi manga online event was co-sponsored by the UCR LGBT Resource Center and Asian Pacific Student Programs. Eighty-three members of the UCR community registered to attend. The replay is now available on the SCUA events page, along with other recent recordings of presentations by SCUA employees.
